As one of the first areas developed in Hong Kong, Wan Chai today is sometimes described as the heart of the city, representing the epitome of Hong Kong, with a well-established arts centre, world renown exhibition and conference complexes, luxury apartments, five-star and boutique hotels, shopping malls, metropolitan office towers and a large government building side by side home decoration stores, bars, and a multitude of individual and characteristic local shops.
Wan Chai is also a major hub for foreign and Chinese culture, where old colonial buildings coexist with modern architecture.
